Essential oils are becoming more and more popular and there are many good reasons that can explain their growing popularity! One of them is that a few drops of these little magic potions can relieve and soothe many aches and pains, from migraines to skin problems. Not sure where to start or which ones to try out first? Here are 5 common ones to discover!
You probably know this one better than you think! If you ever had a cold growing up, your parents might have rubbed your chest and back with a thick, sticky, gel-like ointment from a little blue jar. Remember that strong smell, that soothing warmth? It was the smell of eucalyptus, a powerful cough suppressant. Extracted from the leaves of the tree of the same name, main food source of the incredibly cute koalas, eucalyptus has antiviral, antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It can help with nasal congestion and soothe a bad cough. It is also used in cosmetics for its invigorating effect. At Chanv, we add it to our soap and shampoo!
How romantic would it be to walk, have a picnic and take it easy in a field of lavender on a breezy, sunny day? Aweeee. Just the thought of it sounds peaceful, doesn’t it? The emblematic flower of the well-known Provence region in France, is just as calming in its essential oil form as it is in your daydreaming sessions. The beautiful, lilac-coloured flower is as pleasing for your eyes as it is for your health. It improves sleep, relieves pain from migraines, and can even help with anxiety because of its soothing effect. That’s actually why it is used in our Chanv bath and massage oil: so you can relax after a hard, stressful day. Lavender is also great for your skin, since it has anti-inflammatory, healing and toning properties.
Mostly used in cosmetics, it is one of the superstar essential oil at Chanv! It is unbeatable when it comes to treating skin problems. Highly effective against rosacea, acne, eczema or to reduce the appearance of scars, it also helps with your worst enemy: premature skin aging. Yup! Italian Helichrysum, with its anti-aging properties, is THE oil to help your skin stay young and healthy. It is also awesome at giving you a little boost when you are feeling tired. The essential oil comes from the beautiful, sun-shaped flowers of the Helichrysum plant. In our products, you can find this precious oil in our radiance serum, ointment, our sensitive skin cream and in our intensive care oil.
Rosewood and Musk Rose
It might sound like a romantic name, but rosewood has nothing to do with the popular Valentine’s day flower! It is in fact extracted from the wood of the rosewood tree (AKA Aniba rosaeodora). It is said to reduce the appearance of fine lines, prevent wrinkles and stimulate cell renewal. Therefore, it is very effective when added to face or body scrubs. It is also used in lotions against acne and eczema. Aside from being amazing for your skin, it also helps with sleep and its wonderful aroma can reduce stress. (We even heard it’s an aphrodisiac … but we will leave it up to you to check that fact!) Musk rose has similar properties, but it comes from the tiny fruits of a shrub. It can help with scars and age spots. Rosewood and Musk Rose: a great team, don’t you think?
You probably have some in your garden or even in a small planter on your balcony. You might even remember seeing it in stores during the holidays … shaped as a mini Christmas tree. This aromatic plant (herb, in fact), is very common and often used in cooking. But did you know it can also be transformed into a very useful essential oil? If your morning run leaves your legs feeling stiff and painful, rosemary essential oil offers relief against muscle soreness (that’s why it is added to our Chanv muscle cream). It also has a stimulating effect on the body, which means it can help get you back on your feet and ready for your day after your early morning training. In fact, it is so invigorating that it’s wiser to stay away from it at night. Amongst its other virtues, rosemary is an antifungal oil, making it the perfect ingredient in natural deodorant. Want to know another secret about rosemary? It helps your hair stay healthy and reduces hair loss.
Of course, there are many, many, many more essential oils to choose from and discover. Pink grapefruit, tea tree oil, citronella oil and peppermint, just to name a few, are out there waiting to show off their amazing powers!
